NEXT GENERATION LEADER

By

I am currently rereading the book next generation leader by Andy Stanley. This is such a great book. It is simple and to the point for any level of leadership. We are using it in our weekly pastoral team meetings as well.

One thing that has really struck me is this – leaders often times think that they have to be well balanced – they have to be good in every area. Andy states that organizations have to be well balanced but leaders are never well balanced. Individual leaders will have a few areas that they are really strong and those are the areas that we must focus in. A smart leader will learn to delegate the rest. Focus on the few areas that we can really excel in then delegate the rest; build up a team that can compliment the leader’s strengths and weaknesses.

Often times we want to try and focus on our weaknesses and build those up – but then we end up not spending enough time in our areas of strength – which is where we will have our greatest impact.

Stop trying to be the well balanced leader who has it all. Teams and organizations need to be well balanced – but leaders must find the one or two things that he/she excels in and then delegate the rest. As a lead pastor there are only a few things that I can do really well, there are few things that I can not delegate – that is where I want to spend my time. The rest I can delegate and must delegate if I want this faith community to grow beyond my own weaknesses.
